A very long wait, but naturally a lot of answers and stuff.
Major background info episode. Mercurymon and Kurata debate what happened 10 yrs ago when the humans came, and explain what happened to Masaru's dad. He's on a crazy mission, so who knows where he is.
Interesting that the ' rules' earlier mentioned in the series (specificly episode 22, although signs of it with that drimogemon incident) was all set up by Dad. Tombe. (by the way, Masaru gets his 'punch-a-digimon tendencies from dad. He tried fighting Saberleomon, and Mercurimon...) Dad made the digivices. He sent Kudamon and Kamemon to Satsuma and Old Man, and they formed DATS. And Dad is on a mission to find Yggdrasil. (Points to x-evolution) And he calls Masaru a 'naughty boy'. Of course-10 yrs ago, Masaru was 4, so of course he's troublesome.
Kurata..needs maimed. After all the agreements and stuff, HE dragged the human soldiers to the digital world to maim and kill digimon in a way so they don't come back. Using digimon he MADE. (this explains why in episode 18 when Old Man and Mercurimon had contradictory views of hte humans...so now even more curious on what happened after the battle...)Last human that intentionally tried to make a real digimon was Willis(drawing digimon doesnt' count). He also made the digital gate the kids used in Mercurimon's place.
And, in episode 22 when they were dealing with SaberLeomon, this explains what came and zapped him, making it so the kids could beat him, and why the digiegg went poof. He's trouble, and needs maimed. But at least compared to most of the digimon he maimed, he had a semi-logical reason for why he'd maim SaberLeomon-he had tried to maim the exploration team 10 yrs ago.
So, now Kurata is using his custom-made digimon to maim Mercurimon. He sooooo needs maimed. And, by pointing out to Masaru that he's in DATS, he shouldn't really attack Kurata. TOmbe, this is getting veeerrrrry complicated. Tombe Jesuis's hat.
