HTML Coding
When applicable, I’ll make comparisons between the text coding for proboards and the actual html coding. However, to make sure that my attempts of showing the proboard coding doesn’t actually ‘work’, I’ll include underscore in the actual code. (Therefore code for bold will be [_b_] text [_/_b_] )
In addition, I will use bold to reflect text that would be seen on-screen(therefore something the user would edit), and italics to reflect text that needs changed to work(such as the actual link when inserted into a formatting code). Underline will be used for text and other code that needs erased for code to work or appearance to look right(similar to how underscore would not be included in the proboard format codes)

Topic 1 | _ | Line Breaks |
In text documents and proboards, simply pushing enter. However, it’s important to remember that for HTML, pushing enter for a line break will NOT work. Not at all. There is a code. | ||
Pro | “pushing enter” | |
HTML | <BR> | |
Topic 2 | _ | Apostrophes |
Yeah, I know, punctuation has a code? Yup, for HTLM it does. If you leave an apostrophe in the document on the site, it’ll turn into &rsquo . Yeah. But there’s a code for it. I bet there’s other punctuation that has codes too, but I’ve yet to encounter them. | ||
Pro | Apostrophes work in proboards. | |
HTML | Code = ’ Just that, inserted where the apostrophe goes, without any spaces. Therefore, the word there’s would be there&rsquos. But on the site it’ll be there’s. | |
Topic 3 | _ | Bold, Underline, Italics |
The three basic appearance formatting changes in text documents, used for various purposes. Frequently, bold and underline are used as headers of sections, while italics is usually a side comment. In game, italics may be thoughts, bold is yelling, and underline is rarely used, if ever, as OOC announcements. | ||
Pro | [_b_] text [_/_b_] [_u_] text [_/_u_] [_i_] text [_/_i_] | |
HTML | <b>text</b> <u>text</u> <i>text</i> | |
Topic 4 | _ | Font Size |
Proboard basic size is 2, while HTML is 1, but it’s fairly small. I have no idea how this would convert to ‘size 12 font’ and stuff like that. Then again, changing the ‘view’ size will make everything change, IF it has a font change. Somehow, text without font change will stay the same size. | ||
Pro | [_size=2_]text[_/size_] | |
HTML | <font size="3" face="Verdana"> text </font> | |
Topic 5 | _ | Basic Links |
One of the most important concepts for html. Therefore there’s dozens of ways to do fancy links. I have no idea how half of them work, and another half, I barely understand what the explanation’s talking about anyway. | ||
Pro | [_url=link_]link title[_/url_] | |
HTML | <a href=complete Link>Link title</a> | |
Topic 6 | _ | Page Link (using folders) |
When formatting/posting this is not something really noticed when linking on proboards, but if used, it can be important for html coding. However, as a user, it can make things easier to navigate. For proboards, it would be similar to how there are separate boards and subboards for threads. On the server, which is accessed through the FTP program, there is the main page, and then folders. Each folder has a title(or technically, an abbreviation of the title. Example, “Timeline” is “TL”. When a page is posted in one of the folders, the folder’s title is included in the code for the site. 90% of the FD info site will be in a “FD” folder, which will then have sub-folders. | ||
Pro | No coding for proboards-locate proper board or link in title. | |
HTML | (direct example, rather than generalized) tombejesuis.com/FD/TL/seasonal.html tombejesuis.com = Basic website tombejesuis.com/FD = FD info site folder tombejesuis.com/FD/TL = Timeline folder tombejesuis.com/FD/TL/seasonal.html = actual page AKA, http://website/folder/page.html is the basic code format. All folders must be included for link to work. | |
Topic 7 | _ | Folder Link Shortcut |
This relates to the folders on the FTP server and HTML links, so there’s no proboard relevance. In addition to making it easier to find pages on the server, using folders makes it easier to make links. | ||
HTML | The basic link format is <a href=complete Link>Link title</a> However, IF the link is to another page on the site, then the basic website can be dropped. Therefore, if linking to the Seasonal Influence page, tombejesuis.com/FD/TL/seasonal.html, we can drop the tombejesuis.com portion of the link. *Then we are left with /FD/TL/seasonal.html Now we take the basic link format, <a href=complete Link>Link title</a>, and insert the folder portion of the link. Therefore the Link format will be <a href=/FD/TL/seasonal.html>Seasonal Influence</a> | |
8 | _ | Predesigned Format Layout Code |
Since I don’t understand everything in HTML, I use predesigned formats for the layout on the actual pages. I’m slowly learning how to manipulate information inside the boxes and stuff, but not the actual code to put this here, that there, change this, stretch this box another inch. Nope. No clue. When having members help create pages using the FD page format, I’ll send them the actual format html coding to them, but the code will also include two rows of stars to indicate the actual ‘text’ space. The information for the page would go in between the stars, but the editor needs to remember to remove only the stars. | ||
Pro | Proboards provides nice little typing box. | |
HTML | <fancycodingforlayout> <linksforboxes.com> <formatingfortextbox> ******************* Insert text here ******************* </formatingfortextbox> </linksforboxes.com> </fancycodingforlayout> |
